RING NIGHT COUNTDOWN · DAY 16 OF 20
Four preseason losses expose the questions
The Garden Brief: The Knicks are 0–4 in the preseason through October 13, and the results have exposed issues worth separating from panic.
Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers · 7:00 p.m. ET tipoff · Madison Square Garden · NBC / Peacock. The Knicks won the 2026 Finals 4–1 over San Antonio, their first title since 1973.
The report: what we know
The Knicks are 0–4 in the preseason through October 13, and the results have exposed issues worth separating from panic. Minnesota beat New York 122–104 at Madison Square Garden on October 12. Toronto followed with a 148–98 victory against a Knicks team resting its starters the next night. The latter score is ugly; the personnel context is essential.
Why it matters for the defending champions
Mike Brown has deliberately kept elements of the offense simple as he evaluates how players read defenses and execute under pressure. That makes the preseason more like a stress test than a preview of the finished playbook. Slow passing and weak defensive rebounding are still real concerns, even when the coaching staff intentionally limits its scheme.
What fans should watch next
The remaining home preseason game against Toronto on October 15 is a better immediate checkpoint than speculation about the banner ceremony. The coach wants to see improvement without sacrificing the health of core contributors. The ring ceremony on October 20 will celebrate the past; whether those lessons stick is what matters for the season ahead.
What to watch before October 20
There are three reliable checkpoints for fans tracking the defending champions: October 15 brings New York's final listed preseason game against Toronto; October 19 is the NBA opening-day roster deadline at 5 p.m. ET; and October 20 is the championship banner celebration followed by the game against Philadelphia. Treat rumors about lineups or jewelry designs as unconfirmed until the team or league announces them.
