14 Straight: Dodgers Clinch Another Postseason Berth — and October Is Already Getting Complicated

October is officially on the calendar again in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers clinched a postseason berth on September 14, extending their remarkable run to 14 consecutive playoff appearances. For a franchise that has made October baseball feel almost routine, the achievement can be easy to glide past. It shouldn't be.

Fourteen straight postseason trips ties the MLB record for consecutive playoff appearances, and this one arrives with a very different feeling than some of the Dodgers' smoother September marches. Los Angeles is headed back to the postseason, but the club is also trying to get healthy, stabilize its pitching staff and make sure its biggest stars are ready when the games become unforgiving.

The Dodgers Are In. Now the Real Work Starts.

Los Angeles secured the berth with a 4-1 win in Cincinnati on September 14. Tarik Skubal delivered seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, while Kyle Tucker homered and Teoscar Hernández added a two-run shot. It was the kind of clean, controlled win that looks exactly like the blueprint a contender wants to carry into October.

The larger story is the streak itself. Reaching the postseason once requires talent. Doing it year after year requires an organization capable of replacing production, surviving injuries and continually building around a championship-level core. Fourteen consecutive appearances represents an era, not merely a hot stretch.

There Is One Giant October Question: Shohei Ohtani

The celebration comes with obvious uncertainty. Shohei Ohtani was placed on the 15-day injured list on September 11 while dealing with left-knee and right-biceps issues. The Dodgers have shut him down from pitching for the remainder of 2026, but the current plan leaves open the possibility of his returning as a hitter on September 23.

That timetable matters. A September 23 activation would leave only a handful of regular-season games for Ohtani to find his timing before postseason baseball begins. The Dodgers do not need September statistics from him nearly as much as they need a physically functional Ohtani in October.

Manager Dave Roberts has made the priority clear: the IL stint is about giving Ohtani the best chance to be the player Los Angeles needs when the postseason arrives.

The Pitching Staff Is Still Moving

Ohtani is not the only health concern. Right-hander Edgardo Henriquez landed on the 15-day injured list September 14 with lower-back discomfort and cannot return before the regular season ends. Los Angeles recalled Bobby Miller and Paul Gervase as the club continues working through its late-season pitching configuration.

Freddie Freeman has also been managing right-knee soreness, although the Dodgers have indicated he is expected back without an IL stint.

That makes the final stretch more than a victory lap. The Dodgers have already earned admission to October. The remaining games are about deciding which version of the roster actually enters it.

Why 14 Straight Still Matters

There is a strange side effect to sustained success: fans begin judging seasons almost exclusively by championships. In Los Angeles, making the playoffs has become the expectation rather than the achievement.

But zoom out. Baseball is designed to disrupt dynasties. Draft position gets worse when teams win. Players age. Free agents leave. Injuries arrive without warning. Opponents copy successful ideas. Maintaining a championship window for more than a decade requires constant reinvention.

The Dodgers have now managed to keep that window open for 14 straight seasons.

And after championships in 2024 and 2025, the standard is no longer simply reaching October. The Dodgers are attempting to turn an extraordinary run of consistency into another championship run.

What Dodgers Fans Should Watch Next

The standings matter, but the most important September scoreboard may be the health report. Can Ohtani return on schedule and regain his swing quickly? Can Freeman's knee settle down? Which relievers emerge as Roberts' most trustworthy late-inning options? And can the rotation carry the club if the offense needs time to get fully healthy?

Those questions will determine whether September 14 is remembered merely as the night Los Angeles qualified again — or as the beginning of another deep October.
